If you’re enlightened you would agree as the yoga masters say, Sin is humans working towards the misconception that they are human. The constricted thinking of this culture can keep us off the path of truth and away from the supreme goal of knowing Thyself. Svadhyaya or self study is from the second of the eight branches of yoga. Did you know there are 8 branches of yoga that lead to knowledge of the True Self? Most practitioners only are practicing from branch number three which is only the physical practice of yoga. Too bad most yoga studios don’t actually teach what yoga really is. I have said it many times, if they don’t teach the emotional, spiritual and psychological benefits of yoga you are in a fake yoga class! Self study, from the second branch of yoga, means not only try to learn who you really are but one should study wisdom and truth from all religions and cultures throughout human history. When one suffers from constricted thinking the misconception of being only human keeps one experiencing the never ending cycle of pain and pleasure and never getting close to real lasting bliss, which is the supreme goal in life on this planet of experiencing your native state, eternal spirit.
Well, why should one even read these words? Most won’t read these words because we are in the Kali Yuga age of darkness and most could careless about self study. Why should one meditate or read books from other religions or cultures when the TV is on with your favorite show, sporting event or a text is waiting? There is too much to do outside of the house, too many movies, restaurants and places to visit to keep one from the austerity of developing ones movement towards the True Self. The True Self is characterized by love, joy, peace, patience, contentment, purity, kindness, gentleness, humility, blissfulness, harmonious, etc. When one works toward self study this new knowledge sets them free to become an original thinker moving toward indestructible bliss. I want some of that! Our culture has given us constrictive thinking and blinded us from real truths and suggested austerities such as reading more of certain types of books and urging meditative processes.
Here are some books you could start with to move toward more self knowledge. Autobiography of a Yogi, The Bhagavad Gita, The Tibetan Secret Doctrines, Tibet’s Great Yogi, Milarepa, The Yoga of Jesus, Gheranda Samhita, The Yoga Sutras, Krsna, Bhagavata Purana, Jnana Yoga, The Srimad Devi Bhagavatam, Kundalini Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Raja Yoga, Teachings of Lord Caitanya, Shiva Sutras, Samatvam, For Seekers of God, The Science of Self-Realization, The Masters and The Path, Brother of the Third Degree, The I AM Discourses, Conversations with God, Fourteen Lessons in Yoga Philosophy & Oriental Occultism, Sadhana, Eckhart Tolle, The Second Coming of Christ, True Christianity, Divine Providence, Secrets of Heaven, Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East, From Light to Sound, Eckankar, The Yoga of Siddha Boganathar, The Vedas, The Upanishads, and anything else you can devour from these lines of knowledge. So, one can watch TV and enjoy the pleasures of this temporary life or practice the disciplines of meditation, learning and experience eternity which is who you really are. Choose wisely.
